Orange Slice Jello Shots

Share

Most people dread Wednesday as Hump Day, the Middle of the Week, halfway to the weekend. Not here at Savory Reviews, Wednesday is the day where we get drunk. Yep, Cocktail day.  This week we explored the world of Jello Shots. A couple of weeks ago, my friend Jeff (the hand model in the taco posts) told me about jello shots that used orange peel as the cup.  I was intrigued so I decided to try it out.  Instead of a shot glass or paper cup we are going to be using a hollowed out Orange. That way you can get every little ounce of alcohol out of the shot. I hate paper cups as the jello always sticks to it and you can’t get the full shot.  Here is my solution.  What can I say, I am here to help.

Orange Jello Shots

As you can see the Jello solidified perfectly and the orange wedges held their form perfectly.

Orange Slice Jello Shots

  • 3 large oranges
  • 1 large box of Orange Jello (6oz)
  • 1 cup orange vodka
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup ice cold water
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice

Boil 1 cup of water.  This takes time and the prep work for everything else should take about the same.

Next cut the orange in half lengthwise.

I used navel oranges as that is all that I could find this time of year. Make sure cut them lengthwise through the stem. Otherwise they might leak.

Now using a spoon scoop out the pulp right down to the white pith.  Scoop the pulp into a bowl as we will need to reserve 1/2 cup of the orange juice.  When scooping out, make sure not to slip and push the spoon all the way through the rind.

Cleared out and ready for some alcoholic jello

Using a strainer to catch the pulp, squeeze the pulp over a measuring cup to get 1/2 cup of fresh juice.  Pour the juice into a medium sized bowl.

Next add the cup of vodka and the half cup of cold water to the bowl.  Mix.

I utilized Absolut Mandrin, as it was the cheapest vodka at the ABC store. These shots are full of flavor and can hide the most hideous tasting alcohol. Absolut is a fine vodka and was extremely surprised that it was the cheapest. Mainly because no other flavored vodka came in airplane bottles and I didn't want a liter of it.

Open up the jello mix and place it into a large bowl.  Then add 1 cup of boiling water and stir until the jello crystals have dissolved.  Then pour in the vodka mixture and stir.

Pour the vodka into the mix

Place the orange halves on a muffin tin to keep them upright.  Then pour the jello into each orange half.  Make sure to pour it all the way to the top.

How awesome does that look, I bet it is enough to make even Bill Cosby dizzy.

Carefully place the pan in the refrigerator and chill for at least 4 hours.

Sneak Peak into my inner sanctum that is my refrigerator. OMG Savory Reviews has heavy whipping cream in his fridge.

Remove the orange halves from the fridge and cut into wedges.  Serve as is.  The perfect jello shot.

Tasty and full of alcohol. Sounds like the perfect meal.

Enjoy and eat responsibly!!

  • Bionicgrrrl - Your friends sound awesome. Watermelon sized jello shots, wow!!! I might just have to make them for the pure spectacle of them. Maybe I can throw in some sugar watermelon seeds for some added texture. Hmm. You totally got me thinking.

  • @SaraMae - Glad you liked the recipe. Yes, a silicone mold works better, but I was lazy. I may go steal my mom's this weekend. She has cross shaped ones!

@Rex - I bet lemons and limes would be cute also. Or for my lush friends, a watermelon!

  • I've made these before, they're amazing, I love the muffin tray idea to keep them upright. I always just put them on a cookie sheet pan. I usually use like 15 oranges.. [I waste a lot of orange]...

Someone needs to make reusable claspable plastic slice things to make these, and detatch them apart. Would be GENIUS!

    • I spilled 3 of them when I made them the first time. After that I was looking for some way to keep them upright. After digging through the drawers and cupboards, I found the muffin pan worked perfectly.

A reusable orange slice jello shot container, I like it. Any readers out there know how to manufacture silicone molds?

  • I just made these for the New Year party tonight and they came out awesome ! Easy to cut too, which surprised me, I just sharpened up my knife real good right before and all went well. i think everyone's gonna love them. Thanks for the clear tutorial :) And Happy New Year :)
