As a bartender I always needed a go to drink for people that didn’t like alcohol, but wanted to get a buzz. This drink has great flavor, masks alcohol very well and comes in a bright red package.
This adds the best part of drinking to the traditional non-alcoholic drink. Vodka!!
The Not-So-Shirley Temple
Fill a rocks glass with ice. Add the vodka and 7-up or Sprite. Then top with the Grenadine and stir. Top with the maraschino cherries and serve.
This drink is tasty and sweet. Not for the person that hates sweet, but definitely for the person that hates the taste of alcohol.
When I used to bartend I would get asked to make a drink for a person. They would always say, surprise me, or give me whatever you recommend. I created a little chart to help you out if you ever have a party or find yourself bartending. It sounds basic, but it works 90% of the time.

Ginger ale is used in a Shirley Temple, not 7Up or Sprite.
Jennie,
I agree that in a traditional Shirley Temple ginger ale is used, however in modern versions of the drink they use 7up or Sprite as the base. I am guessing because it is more palatable to the kids. I went with this more common version for the base of my drink. Thanks for the comment.
