I am a huge fan of grilled potatoes. I have previously made potato coins, but some fell through the grates and I wanted to try something a tad bit different. So, I decided to try potato planks. I cut the whole potato lengthwise into 4-5 slices. Then I season and the rest is history. I also received a new toy in the mail. A Cast Iron Grill Grate from Craycort at http://www.cast-iron-grate.com.  The cast iron grate replaces the flimsy grate that comes with the grill.  It is sectioned so that you can remove parts to stoke the coals and it is cast iron, to give you the best possible sear on your steaks.

Potato Planks

Wash the potatoes and then slice them lengthwise into 1/4-3/8 inch slices.

Toss the slices in olive oil.  Then season with salt, pepper, garlic, parsley and thyme.  Make sure to coat each side evenly. I did this in two steps.  Season one side, wait 10 minutes and then season the other side.  This will allow the seasoning to stick to the potatoes.

Preheat the grill.  Setup the grill for both direct and indirect heat.  Since this was my first go around with the new Cast Iron Grate, I wanted to show it off.  The basic ring fits into the standard grate holder for the weber.

Then it comes with grate inserts that fit onto the ring.  They also make griddle and vegetable basket inserts.  It is a pretty nifty grate.  Check out the accessories for this grate here.

Once the coals are ready or your gas grill is pre-heated, place the potatoes directly over the heat.

Cook for 5-8 minutes or until the potatoes get a nice golden brown with grill marks.

Flip the potatoes and then cook for another 5-8 minutes or until the other side is a golden brown.

Slide the potatoes over to the indirect side of the grill and let them rest while you cook your main entree. If you are only cooking the potatoes, cook them over indirect heat for at least 10 minutes to make sure they are light and fluffy on the inside.

The other great part of this cast iron grate is that you can remove a single section to push the coals around without having to remove the entire grate.  That way the potatoes can be chillin on the grill why I consolidate the coals to give my steaks the perfect sear.  This is an amazing grate.  Check it out here.

Remove the potatoes and serve.

These potatoes were a hit.  Dana said that we should add them to our go-to list of sides.  When she says that they have to be amazing!

Craycort makes grates for charcoal and gas Weber grills and for Big Green Eggs.  I believe that they are a great improvement over the stock grate and a worth while investment.  Check them out at http://www.cast-iron-grate.com.

The Cast Iron Grill Grate for post was supplied to me free of charge from http://www.cast-iron-grate.com.  While the grate was free, the review found on this blog is truthful and honest in my opinions, it is not an advertisement.
