Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour plus extra for biscuit forming
  • 12 oz butter 1 1/2 sticks
  • 2 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 1/2 tbs sugar
  • 1 tbs + 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, baking soda and baking powder.
  • Add the ice cold butter and cut it in using a pastry blender or knife. Blend in the butter until you get pea sized pieces. This will take a couple of minutes.
  • Create a well in the center of the flour mixture and add the butter milk. Fold in the flour to incorporate the mixture. You can use a spatula or your hands. I prefer using my hands.
  • Once the dough has come together, pour it out onto a floured surface. Roll out the dough into a uniform height, about 3/4 inch tall. Then using a floured biscuit cutter cut into 12 biscuits. You will have to re-roll the dough to get all 12 biscuits.
  • Place the biscuits onto a parchment lined cookie sheet and bake for 18-22 minutes or until golden brown. Let the biscuits cool on the sheet for 1 minute before removing to a cooling rack.
  • These biscuits are great slathered in butter or even as a breakfast sandwich.
