How about wine tasting?

What is Flo Fest?  Well, Flo fest is a wine and music festival, right here in Northern Virginia.  Enjoy a full day of incredible Flo Wines, Flo Premium Sangria, and Food while listening to Jazz, Rock, Funk, Soul and World Music.  Flo Fest will held at the Tarara Winery in Leesburg on Saturday July 24th.

Featuring:Levi Stephen; Lucky Dub ; Modern Thieves; Drop Electric; Marcus Johnson
with special appearances by: Ju’not Joyner, Phil Martin, DJ Young Pulse, Josh Coyne and Jukebox the Ghost

I had a chance to chat with Ben Thornewill of Jukebox the Ghost.  This is a must read as he bashes High Life in Milwaukee and thinks all cheesesteaks are the same.

It was quite the interview, here is the transcript:

Rex:  How are you doing?

Ben: A little in between right now. Currently, I am moving into a new apartment.

Rex: I totally understand, I hate moving.

Ben: It sucks, however, we are coming down to DC to play a wine festival.

Rex: I have seen bands at Irish Festivals, beer festivals, bourbon festivals, bbq events, but never at a wine festival. Have you ever played a wine festival before?

Ben: Not that I know of. We played a beer festival. We played Milwaukee Summerfest. It was weird because we played at the center stage and I went on a 10 minute rant about how High Life is the worst beer around. Then later I found out I was on the High Life Stage. I was told a story about somebody else doing that and not getting paid. However, it ended up being alright and we got paid. But, wow, dodged a bullet there.

Rex: Come on, High Life is the champagne of beers.

Ben: I don’t know how.

Rex: How would you classify your music?

Ben: Genre – Indie pop rock. You could also call it Indie piano pop rock.

Rex: I see that you guys formed while going to school in DC.  What school did you guys meet at?

Ben: GW University. Met freshmen year.

Rex: Where did you guys start out at?

Ben: Started out at the Velvet Lounge. We also played Black Cat and the Rock and Roll Hotel.

Rex: I have to ask as a food blogger, what was you favorite place to eat while in DC?

Ben: I know it is probably cliche, but Ben’s Chili Bowl. Amazing. I had the best breakfast there.

Rex: You guys are in Philly now?

Ben: Yeah we are living there right now.

Rex: I have to ask, Pat’s or Geno’s?

Ben: Do you want the honest answer?

Rex: Give it to me.

Ben: You can’t tell them apart. If anyone tells you that they are different they are making it up. Honestly, I can’t pick a favorite, I have had them both. People in Philly are probably wanting to kill me right now.

Rex: Never heard that answer before.

Rex: The normal clientele at a wine festival doesn’t usually listen to indie rock, any thoughts?

Ben: No idea, what people are going to want to listen to. We might play a little toned down. I know that we are not allowed to swear. No matter what, we are gonna rock out.

Rex: Do you at least get to drink for Free?

Ben: I think so. I can’t believe that they would hold out wine from one of the bands.

Rex: I was listening to Empire today.  Love it.  When does your album come out?

Ben: The Album goes on sale September 7th. Everything under the sun.

Rex: Are you going to tour for the new album?

Ben: We are going to do a full national tour. Starting on the east coast and moving around the country.

Rex: Any tour dates yet?

Ben: Tour dates are coming. We will be playing the Black Cat.

Rex: Since I am not going to be able to get to the wine festival this weekend I will have to catch your show at the Black Cat.

Ben: We will definitely give you a shout out when we come to town.

Rex: I hope you guys have a great set, and get lots of free wine. Make sure not to make fun of the wine.

Ben: It is gonna be a blast. I won’t.

Rex: But you made fun of High Life – the champagne of beers. It is basically a wine.

Ben: Don’t worry I can’t see myself making fun of the wine.

  1. I waited until after the drawing, couldn't be there so didn't want to enter. But wanted to say, great interview, the High Life story was rather funny.
