Grilled Scallops

So I went to the store today and they had a deal on Sea Scallops.  They were 8.99 a pound.  A steal if you ask me.  So I picked up 10 scallops for dinner.  I wanted to try something a little different so I made a BBQ sauce for them out of Hoisin Sauce and Orange Juice.

Served over a pile of couscous this was a great meal.

Grilled Scallops

  • 10-12 scallops
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 2 tbs Asian chili garlic sauce
  • 1 tbs soy sauce
  • 1 tbs sugar

Dry off the scallops with a lint free rag or paper towels.  Skewer the scallops using wide skewers.  If you don’t have wide skewers use two skewers.  Scallops are a tricky bunch and will rotate on you when you try to flip them.  Multiple skewers or wide skewers will make it easier.

In a bowl combine the Hoisin Sauce, Orange Juice, Chili Garlic Sauce, Soy Sauce and Sugar.   Mix with a fork or a whisk until everything is combined.

Preheat your grill to medium and lightly oil the grates with vegetable oil.

Brush the tops of the scallops with the bbq sauce and place them sauce side down on the grill.  Then brush the other side with the sauce.  You want the scallops cooked but they will get rubbery very quickly.  I have found that about 3 minutes on each side is perfect.  You can test the doneness by cutting into the scallop and seeing if it is opaque.

I then served my scallops over a bed of seasoned couscous.  It would also be great served over rice or a puree of root vegetable.

Quite honestly I think it would be fabulous over a pile of bacon bits.  Mmm.
