Safeway National BBQ Championship – Recap

It has been a long and hard weekend here in DC.  The temperatures were hovering around 100 all weekend.  Special thanks to Mango Mike for bringing the Air Conditioned Bus.  It would have been horrible without it.  We competed in all four KCBS categories on Saturday and two of the three Memphis in May Categories on Sunday.  Although we did not get in the top six of any categories, Pork Barrel BBQ’s new sweet sauce won the Peoples Choice award.  We were super excited that the attendees thought it was the best sauce at the competition.

I will be back tomorrow with all new recipes.  For now I need to catch up on my sleep, 3 days of bbq can be hard on the body.

  2. So what Bill is referring to is… The whole time people kept coming up to us and asking for food. Due to health codes, we could not sell or give away food. So we had to point to the sign that said that we were not allowed to give samples. However, about 5-6 times throughout the weekend, we had people come up and ask if we sold fish, deep fried fish and/or fresh fish. So the running joke of the weekend, was got any fish?

  3. Saw the peoples choice award on twitter or somewhere this weekend, great job. After tasting it, I can see why, but I'm still waiting to taste it proper on true BBQ. I've only been grilling this week.

    So….got any fish?

    1. Chris – You wouldn't believe the amount of people that wanted fish. It was crazy. Who goes to a BBQ competition and looks for fish?
