Game day is serious business at our house. The guys come over, the TV is blasting, and everyone’s expecting good food. Over the years, I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t when it comes to game day appetizers. You need food that’s easy to eat with one hand. You need stuff that disappears fast. And you need the ultimate game day appetizers guide so you’re not spending the whole game in the kitchen instead of watching with your friends. I’ve put together all our best party food recipes here on SavoryReviews. These game day appetizers are the ones that get requested every single time.

Wings & Hot Stuff

Pork Belly Burnt Ends AKA MIYM Bacon Cubes

Pork Belly Burnt Ends

Pork belly burnt ends are the most delicious things that may ever touch your tongue. They’re quite literally the best thing that I’ve ever made. We like to call them Melt In Your Mouth (MIYM) Bacon Cubes. These grew out of necessity and then turned into a sensation at our house. They disappear faster than anything else on game day.

Why they work for game day: One-bite snacks, no hands mess, disappear in seconds.

The Ultimate Hot Wing Guide (Every Wing Recipe on SavoryReviews!)

Spicy Barbecue Wings

Hot wings are without a doubt the greatest game day food ever invented. Crispy skin, saucy goodness and just enough heat to keep you coming back for more. Over the years we have developed quite a few wing recipes here on SavoryReviews — and I am not exaggerating when I say we have something for everyone. From smoked to grilled to fried to boneless. From award-winning sauces to simple Buffalo. This is the definitive collection.

Why they work for game day: The ultimate one-hand food. Everyone expects wings on game day.

Dips & Spreads

Queso Fundido

Queso Fundido

Dana and I love Chuy’s Tex-Mex Restaurant! Last year during their Hatch Chili Festival they had a limited time special menu that included Queso Fundido. What is Queso Fundido you ask? Well it is freaking glorious! Basically it’s a warm, creamy dip that will change your life. Make this ahead, keep it warm in a slow cooker, and watch it disappear.

Why it works for game day: Make ahead. Stays warm in slow cooker. Feeds a crowd. Everyone loves cheese dip.

Bacon Onion Jam

Bacon Onion Jam

I made a batch of Bacon Onion Jam that was one of the greatest condiments I’ve ever had. I love it so much, that I put it on everything. During one of my tests I put it on a grilled cheese sandwich and it was magical. You can serve it on crackers, crostini, or with cheese and bread. It’s the ultimate appetizer spread that takes minimal effort but tastes like you spent hours in the kitchen.

Why it works for game day: Make it the day before. Serve on crackers or bread. Everyone goes nuts for it.

Hand-Held Bites

Perfect Jalapeno Poppers (AKA Poppy’s Poppers)

Jalapeno Poppers

Jalapeno poppers are a family favorite. No matter what you call them – jalapeno poppers, jalapeno bites, texas torpedoes or armadillo eggs – they are all delicious and perfect for game day. Stuff them with cream cheese, wrap them in bacon, smoke or grill them, and watch them become the most requested appetizer.

Why they work for game day: One bite. Easy to eat while watching. Can prep ahead. Bacon = always a winner.

Pepperoni Pinwheels – The Ultimate Appetizer

Pepperoni Pinwheels

Pepperoni Pinwheels are the ultimate appetizer. They contain all of the ingredients from everyone’s favorite meal, Pizza! They are easily shared and can be dipped in your favorite pizza/marinara sauce. Pepperoni Pinwheels are like mini pepperoni pizza sans pizza sauce. Therefore you can eat them in your favorite white shirt without worrying about stains. Make them ahead, reheat, and serve.

Why they work for game day: Make ahead. Reheat easy. Taste like pizza. No messy sauce. One-handed eating.

Mozzarella Stuffed Meatballs

Mozzarella Stuffed Meatballs

My son loves meatballs. Therefore, we have them at least once a week in our house. Since we have them so much, I get a little meatballed out. So I decided to make a little twist on the traditional meatball. I stuffed them with soft and gooey mozzarella cheese. These work hot or at room temperature, are easy to eat while watching, and disappear fast.

Why they work for game day: Make ahead. Reheat easy. Cheese inside = game changer. One bite.

Show-Stopping Dishes

Pesto Pull Bread

Pesto Pull Bread

I love my Traeger grill and I always follow their new recipes. I saw an Instagram picture from Traeger for Pesto Pull Bread and I had to try it for myself. While I did not follow the recipe exactly, I did create my own from the picture. Man, it was delicious! This bread is perfect because everyone can grab a piece, it’s warm, it’s cheesy, and it tastes fancy but is actually super easy.

Why it works for game day: Make on the grill. Keep warm. Tear-and-eat format. Looks impressive. Tastes amazing.

Swedish Meatballs

Ever since passing an Ikea on my way to DC I’ve been craving Swedish Meatballs. Hard to believe but Ikea has great affordable food. My favorite is the Swedish Meatballs—those tasty little meatballs in delicious beef gravy. After having the craving for a few days I decided to recreate them. Serve in a slow cooker with toothpicks and watch them disappear. The sauce is rich, creamy, and absolutely addictive.

Why it works for game day: Slow cooker friendly. Toothpick ready. Rich sauce everyone loves. Make ahead.

The Rules of Game Day Appetizers

After years of throwing game day parties, here’s what I’ve learned works and what doesn’t:

WHAT WORKS:

  • One-handed eating – Nobody wants to use both hands while watching the game
  • Make-ahead recipes – You should be watching the game, not cooking
  • Crowd-pleasers – Save the exotic for dinner. Wings, cheese, bacon = crowd winners
  • Keep them warm – A slow cooker is your best friend on game day
  • Variety – Mix hot and cold, spicy and mild, meat and veggie
  • Disappear fast – If it’s still sitting there at halftime, it wasn’t a hit
  • Easy toothpick/napkin friendly – Minimize the mess

? WHAT DOESN’T WORK:

  • Anything that requires two hands
  • Anything that stains white shirts
  • Recipes that require last-minute prep
  • Anything too “fancy” – keep it casual
  • Spicy stuff that requires water/milk (hands off the snacks)
  • Cold appetizers (nobody wants cold food on game day)

The Game Day Appetizer Game Plan

3 DAYS BEFORE:

  • Plan your menu (aim for 4-5 different appetizers)
  • Make shopping list
  • Pick recipes that can be prepped ahead

1-2 DAYS BEFORE:

  • Make dips, jams, anything that tastes better when flavors meld
  • Prep your meatballs (don’t cook yet)
  • Make pinwheels and refrigerate

MORNING OF:

  • Bake/cook items that can be reheated
  • Set up slow cooker stations with appetizers
  • Prep toothpicks, napkins, plates
  • Arrange cold items on platters

GAME TIME:

  • Everything should be ready to eat or reheat
  • Keep warm items in slow cooker
  • Replenish as items disappear
  • Enjoy the game without being stuck in the kitchen

Final Thoughts

Game day is about spending time with good people, watching great football, and eating amazing food. You should be able to do all three without stress. That’s why I’ve focused on appetizers that are delicious, easy to make, and even easier to eat. Every single recipe in this guide has been tested and retested at our house. They’re all crowd-pleasers. They’re all make-ahead friendly. And they all disappear faster than you’d expect.

Pick 4-5 of these, set them out on game day, and I guarantee you’ll be the MVP of the party.

Now stop reading and go make some of these!
