The Old Fashioned

I want to let everyone know that I do read all of the emails that I get. There was a common theme in my emails this last month. Lets set this up. About a month ago I was extremely busy and didn’t have enough time to thoroughly read and review a cookbook. So I wrote a post about the Green Monster Cocktail.  Since that day I have been getting a ton of emails from loyal readers saying that they would prefer a cocktail over a book review.  I say if you want a cocktail, I will deliver.  Plus it allows me to drink on the job.  Hooray!!!  I know that some people like the book reviews so I am going to throw a link to one every so often.  A full review won’t be featured on the main page, but a link to the full review will be provided.  So here we go.  Time for a cocktail.

The Old Fashioned

This week I decided to go old school and make a drink reminiscent of the 50’s as I have been watching a lot of Mad Men (a great TV show, check it out).

Old Fashioned

  • 2 oz Bourbon – (3-4 if you are feeling sassy)
  • 6 oz seltzer – (soda water, club soda, sparkling water – It has a lot of names, most differ on sodium content)
  • 2 dashes bitters
  • 1 sugar cube (1 tsp of granulated sugar)
  • 1 orange wedge
  • 1 maraschino cherry

The ingredients

Whiskey is a great liquor, adding bitters and club soda is even better.

The first step is to place the orange wedge, sugar cube and bitters into a rocks glass.

Next using the back of a spoon or a muddler, muddle the orange and sugar until the cube is finely smashed.

Muddling is fun - My new roommate has a ton of bar tools. I now have access to a muddler. How cool is that.

Next pour in the bourbon.  I am using Wild Turkey Rare Breed.  Why, because it is awesome!!!

I was feeling a bit sassy, actually while trying to take an action shot, I poured in about 4 ozs.

Next fill the glass with ice and pour in the seltzer.  Stir to make sure the sugar is dissolved.

Make sure to fill with ice. A cold drink is a great drink.

The finishing touch is a maraschino cherry on top.

Next time you are gearing up to watch Mad Men, pour yourself an Old Fashioned.

    1. The oldies are really tasty. I am planning on doing a series of older cocktails. Maybe it will help bring them back. I think next week I might do the perfect martini. Any suggestions?
