The Super Drink – The Pomegranate Martini

This week I wanted to make another Martini. So I looked around and though a Pomegranate Martini would be perfect. A Martini with health benefits. Heck Yeah! A little info on our friend the Pomegranate. The name “pomegranate” derives from Latin pomum (“apple”) and granatus (“seeded”).  A Pomegranate contains about 16% of our daily vitamin C in just an 8oz serving.  It is also known as a Super Fruit as it contains punicalagins (antioxidents) which absorb free radicals* (especially good if you live in DC).  I know, I know, you just want to see the drink.

Serve with a lemon twist and this drink is ready to get you drunk and healthy.

Pomegranate Martini

  • 1.5 oz vodka
  • 1 oz triple sec
  • 2.5 oz pomegranate juice
  • squeeze of fresh lemon juice

Chill your favorite martini glass.  I usually let it sit in the freezer for about 15 minutes.

Place all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with a handful of ice.  Shake vigorously for 30 seconds.  Strain the mixture into the chilled cocktail glass.  Serve with a twist and you are ready to go.

Bartender Trick

If you are running late and you have failed to chill the martini glasses, fill the glasses with ice and top off with water. Right before you fill the glasses, just dump the ice and water.   They will be chilled in about 30-60 seconds, about the time it takes to make the cocktail.

If you use fresh pomegranate juice add 3/4 oz of simple syrup to the mix.  Pre-squeezed pomegranate juice usually has some sugar added and does not require the simple syrup.

* The health effects of pomegranate juice have not be conclusively shown in humans.

Yum! My favorite beverage! There is a good premade mix on the market too if you are desperate for a quick one! 🙂

    1. I have actually had some of the pomegranate martini premixes and they are great. They are also cheaper than buying the individual ingredients. So they are also a great way to save some money. Thanks for the tip, Aunt Heidi.
