Cheese Stuffed Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs

What is the ingredient that makes hot dogs awesome.  Yep, it is cheese.  What is the only thing that can make a cheese dog better, Yep, Bacon!!!  So I stuffed the hot dog with cheese, wrapped it in bacon and slowly roasted it over indirect heat.  In return I was given the greatest hot dog in the world.  It had a great crispy crust and a creamy cheese center.  It was basically the greatest hot dog ever.

Slowly cooking the hot dog over indirect heat allows you to have a crispy bacon crust that is cooked all the way through.

  • All Beef Natural Casing Hot Dog
  • Swiss Cheese
  • 2 strips of thick cut bacon
  • 3-4 toothpicks

The ingredients list for this post is quite small but the flavor is out of this world.

The first step is to cut a slit in the hot dog.  Cut the slit about 3/4 of the way through the hot dog.  Next stuff as much Swiss cheese as you can into the slit.

Finally wrap the hot dog with the bacon.  Start at one end, anchor the bacon with a toothpick, and then start wrapping.  When the bacon starts to run out, add another piece of bacon and use a single toothpick to hold both pieces in place.  Then continue until the end and use another toothpick to hold the other end in place.  Having less toothpicks will make it easier to rotate the hot dog.

Next preheat 1/2 of the grill to medium/high heat.  Then place the hot dogs over indirect heat and grill.

Rotate the dogs every 4-5 minutes.

Keep on rotating
Keep on rotating, watch out for the cheese leaking out.

The whole process is going to take about 20 minutes but it is totally worth it.  By doing it over indirect heat and constantly turning you get a crispy piece of bacon that is not raw on the inside.  Cooking over direct heat would cook the outside of the bacon and leave the inside raw.

Finally server the hot dog on a nice hot dog bun.

  1. I was just talking to my dad about the virtues of bacon on a hot-dog — I think a whole new world may have been opened for him! This recipe sounds amazing.

Also, thanks for the bacon-covered chocolate! Melissa gave it to me today at work. It was awesome…and eaten very quickly. It even warranted my first blog post in over a month!

    1. Bacon is amazing on everything. It is a good thing that you had the bacon talk with your father. Some people just need a little push to experience the greatness that is bacon. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed the chocolate covered bacon. I am thinking that a little sea salt would have enhanced the flavor more. I didn't know it was good enough to bring someone out of their blogger hiding spot.

  2. The Mo's Bacon Bar that I've tried does have some sea salt in it, and I think it gives it a little something extra — might be worth a shot!

    1. Cookie make sure to cook the bacon wrapped dogs over low/medium heat in your grill pan. If you cook it over higher heat the bacon will only cook on the outside and the bacon closest to the hot dog will be uncooked. The key is to get a nice crispy crunch from the bacon.

      1. Chris it really needed at least two beers, haha. The crispy bacon was amazing. I have tried this in the past and the only way to cook it properly is to do it low and slow. It was a double snap as I picked up natural casing hot dogs. So awesome.

  3. My mom used to make these with Cheddar cheese, and baked them in the oven when weather prevented grilling. Thanks for the childhood memory! 🙂

  4. Yeah this just looks amazing. You really should have put "Must know how to operate a defibrillator and perform CPR," in your ad for a roommate.

    1. Miss Ann,

I would bake at 400 degrees for about 20-25 minutes. I would place the bacon wrapped hot dogs on a cooling rack over a pan so that the fat from the bacon can drop away from the hot dog. This will give you crispier bacon. I have never done this so it may take a little more or a little less. I am guessing based on the amount of time it takes to cook bacon in the oven. Hope this helps.

  5. I saw this recipe the other night and though I don’t have a grill I tried it in the oven with 2 hotdogs…failed . Then wentt on internet and tried yesterday but partially cooked the bacon then wrapped dogs stuffed with grilled cheddar cheese ( Ball Park Franks)for 20-25 minutes at 425 and my neighbors made 17 dogs disappear so fast and there were only 7 of us. Had grilled onions and sauerkraut on the side they said they were the best dogs they ever tasted. But watch out for the cheese mine over melted and were not as neat but they tsted real good. However I will perfect these dogs before the year is over in my oven.

  8. Swooning! My mom used to make these in the very early 60’s , and they were called Francheesies. I will occasionally make them now, but I use turkey dogs to make them healthier! LOL!
