It has been non-stop snowing here in the DC metro area for almost a week now. The federal government is closed, the state of Virginia has spent almost 2 million on snow cleanup and my car is once again buried. The last part doesn’t really matter as I have a sedan and the roads won’t be plowed at least until Saturday. Plus, there is another snow storm coming in on Monday. Crazy I tell ya. So what is the ultimate gift for a person snowed in? Homemade Hot Chocolate and Peppermint Schnapps. Not only is it warm to the touch, it will warm up your insides too. Plus, the little kick will keep you from feeling the cold.
The hot chocolate will keep forever in an airtight container. So drink on!!
Hot Cocoa Mix
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 cup cocoa
- 2 1/2 cups powdered milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
Zippy Hot Chocolate
- 1/4 cup hot cocoa mix
- 3/4 cup hot water
- 2 oz peppermint schnapps – (4oz if it is really cold out)
- Marshmallows or whipped cream for topping
Prepping the Hot Cocoa
To prepare the hot cocoa mix. Combine the ingredients in a large bowl. Mix till evenly distributed. Cover and store in an air tight container. It will last as long as you need it to as long as you keep it sealed up.
To use add 1/4 cup of hot cocoa mix to hot water. For an extra creamy hot cocoa use hot milk. Top with some homemade marshmallows and you are ready to go.
Making some Zippy Hot Cocoa Cocktails
In a mug, add the hot cocoa mix, hot water, and schnapps. Stir and toss in some marshmallows or top with whipped cream.
This treat will keep you warm and toasty throughout the longest snow storms.
Peppermint schnapps was one of the first alcoholic beverages I ever had (second only after scotch) when I was 15.
That is the best looking hot chocolate I've ever seen or heard of.
