The other day I recreated the Pizza Hut Pan Pizza. To be honest, the only reason I recreated the pizza hut pizza was to figure out the dough so that I could make the breadsticks. The breadsticks are my favorite part of the Pizza Hut experience. Since the dough was perfect, the only thing missing was the breadstick topping.
Pizza Hut Style Breadsticks
Add the dough hook to your stand mixer.
Put yeast, sugar, salt, and dry milk in the bowl of your stand mixer. Add water and stir to mix well. Allow to sit for two minutes or until the mixture starts to bubble. Add oil and stir again.
Gently add the flour and stir until dough forms and flour is absorbed. Then knead the dough with the dough hook on speed 4, for 5 minutes.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and divide the dough into two balls. You can refrigerate the second dough ball.
Pour 4 Tbs of oil into a 9×13 cake pan making sure it is spread evenly. Â I know it sounds gross, but without the oil, you do not get that perfectly crisp crust. If you can find butter flavored oil, the dough will come out with even more flavor.
Roll out the dough into a 9×13 rectangle. Then, place the dough into the 9×13 pan. Cover the pan with a sheet pan and let the dough rest and rise for at least 1 1/2 hours.
Preheat the oven to 475 degrees.
After the dough has risen, cut the dough into 10 equal breadsticks. I used a pizza cutter to score the breadsticks. This will help the sticks form.
Next, lightly spray the top of the breadsticks with butter flavored PAM. Then, lightly sprinkle the top of the breadsticks with the breadstick seasoning.
Place the breadsticks in the oven for 10-15 minutes. When the breadsticks brown and the edges get crispy, remove the pan from the oven.
Then, using a spatula remove the breadsticks from the pan. Break the sticks apart at the scored lines and serve with the pizza sauce.
Making the Sauce
While the dough is rising, mix the sauce ingredients together in a sauce pan. Â Heat with medium heat until the sauce starts to boil, then lower the heat to low. Â Let the sauce simmer for 30 minutes before using.
These were amazing! They were almost exactly the same.

Use butter flavored oil and pam to get the best results.

The key was using the butter flavored oil.
Dude, you are killing me with these "I have to try that" posts! Bookmarked and I can't wait to try them, maybe tonight for the bowl games.
Heya i’m for the primary time here. I came across this board and I to find It truly helpful & it helped me out much. I hope to provide one thing back and aid others such as you aided me.
Help! I don't have one of those fabulous mixers with the various attachments…any suggestions on how to properly make the dough? I'd really like to make these ^^; I've never tried dough like that before so I'm not sure how to do it without the mixer *I only have a handheld with basic beaters LOL*
Buy pizza dough at the grocery store, it’s a lot easier.
Samantha,
At the point where the recipe asks you to assemble the following ingredients in the bowl of your stand mixer, follow these directions instead.
Put yeast, sugar, salt, and dry milk in a large bowl. Add water and stir to mix well. Allow to sit for two minutes or until the mixture starts to bubble. Add oil and stir again.
Slowly add the flour 1/2 cup at a time and stir with a wooden spoon until the flour is absorbed. At some point during the addition of flour it will get a little hard to stir. At this point, roll up your sleeves and turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Continue to add the flour and knead until the dough stops accepting flour and doesn't have a sticky texture. At this point stop adding flour and then knead the dough by hand for about 5 minutes.
Then return to the rest of the recipe.
THANK YOU <3 <3 So excited to try this!
Thanks so much- moves to the UK and Pizza Hut here doesn’t serve breadsticks, just garlic bread. Been craving them for years and they turned out great!
i have two pans of dough rising the the oven right now, one for breadsticks, one for pizza. I couldn't find butter flavored oil at the store, then i realized i have butter flavored soy oil that i put on my popcorn! Can't wait to see how this turns out. I'll update once i've dined in homemade pizza hut style.
Pizza hut cuts the breadsticks and adds the topping after baking.
I was thinking it would get crispier and browner on top if I added the seasoning after baking the bread for awhile at least. Good point. Can't wait to try this awesome recipe 🙂
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I've been looking all over for a recipe for Pizza Hut breadsticks because, like you, I enjoy the breadsticks the most in a Pizza Hut dinner. You did such a magnificent job of posting the recipe details, with the step-by-step pictures! I am so grateful for your sharing your information! I'm baking tomorrow!
Thank you so much for this recipe!! I love Pizza Hut breadsticks, made these tonight, and they are fantastic! I used olive oil instead of butter-flavored or vegetable oil, just so I would be a little less guilty. Also, I made 2 batches of breadsticks, but I didn't have 2 9 x 13 pans, so I used a 9 x 13 cookie sheet. I must say that batch was hard on the bottom, so that confirms you are right to use the deeper pan! The batch from the deeper pan was crispy on the top and bottom like Pizza Hut's. Yummy! Also, I didn't have garlic salt, so I used 3/4 salt and 1/4 garlic powder to sub, and I will use less salt next time. Thanks again! Delicious!!
Thanks so much for the great comment Stephanie. Glad to hear that you like the recipe.
can't wait to try this. with the second half of the dough i'm going to try making cinnamon sticks…..thanks for sharing the recipe
Asha, I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
My 9 year old daughter is presently making these bread sticks in Trinidad. We did not use a machine and so far it is raising nicely. I will give an update in a little while.Thank for sharing!!!!!!!!!
Heyyy I'm in Trinidad trying these toooo 😀
Thanks for a wonderful recipe. My husband is a pizza hut fan and he agreed that the breadsticks I made using your recipe tasted heavenly delicious. The sauce was very closed. I had 1/2 of topping seasoning leftover and will use for next time.
When taking using the second batch of dough, do you just let it rise to room temperature? How should this be done?
I let is rise at room temp for about 2 hours.
I did also, I think 2 hours is better.
Ok I can't wait to try these, but I have a question first…at the top of the recipe it calls for 4TBS of oil, but then in the directions it says to pour 4oz of oil in the bottom of a 9×13 pan. So do I use 4TBS or 4oz (1/2 cup) in the bottom of the pan? I just didn't see where the 4TBS of oil was used so I thought maybe it was an error. Thanks so much for your help!
Ashley – you are correct about the error, I have fixed it. It is supposed to be 4tbs. Also for best flavor I would use butter flavored oil. The butter flavored oil is located near the popcorn in the grocery store. Enjoy!
I love to cook and from some days I am looking for some information about the sandwich or pizza making. Finally, your entire information makes me able to collect some knowledge about the pizza sticks making. Which helps me a lot to enjoy home made pizza sticks. But big thing is that your pizza making ingredients is very handful and easy to collect. That helps me a lot to enjoy more this pizza sticks in my home.
what brand of pizza sauce did you use? The ones I saw at my local grocery store all had seasonings already added to them.
Alisa – i used tomato sauce and not a pizza sauce. You can find it in tthe grocery store near the canned tomatoes.
Your 2 dough balls do not look equal, but I didn’t see anything in the instructions to state otherwise. can you please clarify if the dough is to be split evenly or do we use the larger ball in the 9×13 and save the smaller? Thanks so much!
Holly,
The dough is supposed to be divided in half. Sorry the pictures don’t reflect that.
Rex
Can you make the dough in a bread machine and if so do you have any instructions?
Rodney,
I am sure that you can, however without a bread machine I do not have instructions. If anyone has made it with a bread machine, feel free to add your instructions to the comments here.
Rex
For the bread machine, it depends on the model of the bread machine because some require liquids first, or dry ingredients first. But for mine, its water, so I put water and oil first, then the milk powder and flour, and everything else on the top. It would still work and set it on the dough cycle and it is fine. Just bake it the same way after that.
Thanks for the recipe! Looks great! Just a quick question: For the breadstick seasoning, should i use dry basil and oregano leaves or ground basil and oregano? You specified in the sauce that it was dry basil and dry oregano so I just wanted to double check. I assume dry basil leaves and dry oregano leaves for both the seasoning and sauce will work just fine in the amounts you gave.
Tim, I will have to correct that. Yes, all of the herbs are dried.
Rex
If you can’t find butter flavored oil, use margarine. Mine turned out perfect!
I did not have powdered milk so I used the equivalent of milk + water (1/4 cup milk, 1cup + a couple tbs water until I had a non sticky dough, FYI
At pizza hut, the breadsticks are cooked with nothing on top except a light spray of oil before itwas left to rise. Once its out, then its brushed with oil and topped with the seasoning
I made these bread sticks today and boy, they are right on! I think next time I will sprinkle the herbs mixture on after they bake. My herbs got a little burnt and bitter tasting. Thanks for posting the recipe.
