Dana and I love to drink Moscow Mules! The hint of lime with the ginger beer makes for the perfect cocktail. Plus, I love the look of a nice copper mug! Today we are trying out 4 different types of ginger beer. We are using the exact same recipe for every cocktail, the only difference is the ginger beer. That way we can crown a champion for the perfect ginger beer for amazing Moscow mules. The four ginger beers that we used were: Kroger Ginger Beer, Great Value Ginger Beer, Barritt’s Ginger Beer and Q Ginger Beer. The four ginger beers have a variety of flavors and the winner was super surprising! Let’s get to the competition.
Before we can start we have to define what is considered the perfect Moscow Mule. We tested a few ratios and came up with the perfect recipe. We also suggest that you make them in a copper mule mug. We picked up this four pack of mugs, coasters, jigger, stirring spoon and straws on Amazon for around $40. Check them out if you need to pick some up.

Kroger Ginger Beer
The Kroger beer was one of the cheapest ginger beers on our list. It had a slight bite and smooth taste. When added to the vodka and lime juice it made a pretty good Moscow Mule. We rated it 8/10.
Barritt’s Ginger Beer
Barritt’s ginger beer is from Bermuda. It had a nice bite, but was almost too powerful. It made the back of your throat burn for a second. You definitely knew you were drinking ginger. Overall it was a tad bit overpowering for the perfect Moscow Mule. We rated it 6/10.
Q Ginger Beer
The most expensive of all of the ginger beers and it was by far the worst. It was spicy to say the least. When added to the lime and vodka all you tasted was burn. No matter how much lime we added the burn would not subside. We bought a few 4 packs thinking it would be great, but man we can’t give them away. We rated it 3/10.
Great Value Ginger Beer
The Great Value ginger beer was the cheapest of the ginger beers that we tried. It was also the best ginger beer that we tried. The Great Value ginger beer was well balanced with just a slight bite. It made a great and refreshing Moscow Mule. Definitely our choice when it comes to making a refreshing and delicious Moscow Mule! We rated it 9/10. The winner for our taste test.
Overall Results
- Great Value Ginger Beer 9/10 (Winner)
- Kroger Ginger Beer 8/10 (Close runner up)
- Barritt’s Ginger Beer 6/10
- Q Ginger Beer 3/10
Overall it was a blast mixing and tasting a variety of Moscow Mules. The Walmart Great Value Ginger Beer was definitely the best and most affordable option. It was a surprise winner.
Q ginger beer does have a bite! But we love the bite! Wakes up your taste buds. Great with whiskey. The Kroger ginger been is wimpy. Haven’t tried the others.
