Happy Labor Day!! I went to the store to make some nice green chili sliders but when I was walking through to the deli, I spotted what I thought was a mirage. Could it be? Why yes, it was slider buns. Pepperidge Farm makes slider buns, 12 per pack. Right then and there, I knew I was making green chili sliders.
Green chili sliders with grilled tomatoes and pepper jack cheese.
Green Chili Sliders
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 12 slider buns
- 4 poblano or passilla peppers
- 4 roma tomatoes or small vine ripened tomatoes
- 6 slices pepperjack cheese
- 2 tbs Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- dash cayenne pepper
Roasting the peppers
Place the peppers directly on the hot grill.
Rotate them every couple of minutes until all of the sides are blackened.
When the peppers are blackened, remove them from the grill and place directly into a ziptop bag or in a bowl covered with plastic wrap. Let sit for 10-15 minutes. This will allow the steam to get to the skins and make it easy to remove.
After they have had a little time to rest, you can easily peel the peppers. Use your fingers and remove the blackened skin. Then remove the ends and dice up the peppers. If you want you can remove the skins.
Making the Sliders
In a large bowl combine the meat, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, garlic powder and cayenne pepper. Mix all of the ingredients together. Quick tip – since it was a holiday weekend, they had freshly prepared burger patties for $2.49 a pound while the same meat not shaped was selling for $3.99 a pound. So I purchased the fresh patties and just seasoned the meat and made new patties. Saved $1.50 a pound.
Next Place the sliders directly over medium/high heat. These are a lot thinner than normal burgers so they will cook quickly. About 2 mins in flip the burgers.
At this time also throw slices of tomato onto the grill. These will take only about 30 seconds on each side.
Grill for another minute then add the diced green peppers onto the burger patties. Then cover with the pepperjack cheese. Close the lid and grill for another minute or until the cheese is melted.
Remove the sliders from the grill and place on the buns. Add a slice of grilled tomato and then enjoy.
The green chilies add a nice roasted pepper flavor that is awesome. That along with the pepperjack and the cayenne in the patties makes these burgers little firecrackers.
Ok, here is a group hug.
Great sliders! Seems like everyone in the world is making green chili burgers this week from Bobby Flay’s Throwdown, to Josh at Serious Eats (http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2009/09/green-chile-cheeseburger-grilling-recipe.html), and now yours, which look enticingly drool-worthy!
Nice tip on using the preformed patties to reduce cost.
