Homemade Applesauce

Homemade Applesauce

I picked up some pork chops the other day and decided that grilled pork chops with applesauce sounded like a winner.  I had to, it was a Brady Bunch staple.  So I picked up McIntosh apples and went on a journey to make homemade applesauce.  All of the recipes out there used a ton of apples and made even more applesauce.  So I developed a recipe that is made with four apples and is just enough for a single meal.  I served it piping hot along side the pork chops.  A great meal.

Homemade Applesauce

I served it hot, but it is great cold too.

Apple Sauce

  • 4 McIntosh Apples
  • 2 tsp lemon zest
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1/2 tbs cinnamon
  • 2 tbs brown sugar
  • 2 tbs white sugar
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt

Peel, core and quarter the apples.

Peel and core the apples

In a medium sauce pan, add all of the ingredients.  Place the pan over medium/high heat and bring to a boil.

Bring to a boil

When the ingredients start to boil, reduce to low and simmer for 25 minutes.  Stirring a couple of times to make sure that all of the apples are cooking.

Simmer till soft

After 25 minutes, the apples should all be soft.  Remove the pan from the heat and mash the the apples using a potato masher.

Mash till desired consistency

Serve hot, or refrigerate and serve as a cold treat.
